MG Car Club - Lupp Trophy

The Lupp trophy was presented to MotorSport NZ by the MG Car Club, Wellington to mark the 50th anniversary of the sport.

It is an original 1947 trophy, given to us by her estate, as won by our beloved Sybil, who was patron of the MG Club, Wellington until her sad death.

The idea for the trophy came about whilst 2 executives of the MG Car Club, Trevor Boone & Ross Armstrong were at the 1996 MSNZ AGM in Christchurch. We were standing outside at 4:00 a.m. one very frosty morning after a fire alarm, putting right all that is/was, was/is not right with motorsport, (anywhere in the world) in the company of Paul Te Ponga, MotorSport NZ VP.

We had the night before been at the annual awards dinner and were acutely aware that no trophy was in place for those 'pesky''rusty''geriatic'... classic racers.

So who better than Sybil and her husband of the time, who was one of the 1st office holders of MANZ and a tireless worker for the sport for many years?

1997 Ralph Watson Auckland	One of the gentlemen and characters of classic racing in NZ.
1998 Peter Grant Christchurch	"Baldrick" by name and perhaps by nature. A deserving winner and an MG driver to boot! Peter often lends one of his cars to people to race, which is the true classic spirit. Peter tasting victory with Campbell Robertson.
1999 David Ingram Hamilton	A shot of David's awesome Jaguar MkV11 at work. He is a well known sight at race venues in his bus with the Jag 'in behind".
2000 Geoff Brader Wellington	Geoff is well known in his MG Midget and MGTF competing in all manner of motor sport. Often found tinkering under the bonnet of his car or frequently lending a helping hand on somebody else's car. (Webmaster's note: I have been the frequent recipient of his generosity, particularly when I have been sans car)
2001 Alan Curry Dunedin	Alan is an icon of things MotorSport, has livened up every AGM since Methusila and is a tremendous winner of this award.
2002 Keith Cowan Christchurch	the YUB was a hugely deserving winner.
2003 Ross Armstrong Wellington	Simply brilliant....

2005 Jenny Steere Christchurch	one of the sports' icons... MG through and through
2006 Roger Townshend Christchurch
2007 Noel Atley Invercargill
2008 David Abbott Christchurch
